Pei Mengzhi stood there, still confused.
He had received gifts from many women before—high-end suits, ties, that sort of thing.
But receiving a talisman right after the first meeting? Only Si Fuqing would do that.
Pei Mengzhi looked at the talisman, with two characters hastily written in red cinnabar, and was utterly puzzled.

-talisman
He clicked his tongue. “This is actually quite interesting…”
Save his life?
Naturally, Pei Mengzhi didn’t believe what she said, but he kept the talisman anyway.
After all, he never refused gifts from beauties.
He thought he had made some progress. At least Si Fuqing had given him something, which was more than he could say for her past interactions with Yu Yao.
Holding the talisman in one hand, Pei Mengzhi took out his phone with the other.
He made a call specifically to boast: “Ah Yao, I have to tell you, I’m doing quite well. I only met Miss Si once, and she already gave me a gift. You don’t get that kind of treatment.”
Yu Yao had returned to the capital recently.
Hearing this, he frowned, ready to coldly say, “What does that have to do with me?”
But the words stayed in his throat, and he swallowed them, replacing them with something else: “What did she give you?”
“That’s a secret, I can’t tell you.” Pei Mengzhi sounded carefree. “Anyway, watch closely, I’ll definitely win her over. Unlike you, she’s been treating me quite nicely.”
“Do as you please.” Yu Yao’s voice was cold. “But don’t mention her to me again, or we’re done.”
The mechanical sound of “beep, beep, beep” followed as the call was cut off.
“When did his temper get so bad?” Pei Mengzhi scratched his head. “Forget it, I can’t figure out what’s going on with him.”
He decided not to go drinking at the club and slowly headed back home instead.
Pei Mengzhi’s mother was sitting on the sofa reading a magazine. She spoke without looking up, her tone indifferent, “You’re back?”
“Mom.” Pei Mengzhi’s smile faded, and he answered, “Yes, I’m back.”
“What’s that in your hand?” Mrs. Pei finally looked up. Her sharp eyes spotted something. “Let me take a look.”
Pei Mengzhi instinctively pulled his hand back before he could say anything.
That little gesture caused Mrs. Pei’s expression to turn cold.
She stood up and snatched the talisman from Pei Mengzhi’s hand.
After unfolding and looking at it, she was furious, “What is this? What does it say?”
Pei Mengzhi took a deep breath. “It’s just a talisman, something written for fun. If there’s nothing else, I’ll head upstairs.”
He reached out to take it back, but Mrs. Pei blocked him.
“Talisman? What kind of superstitious nonsense is this?” Mrs. Pei had no intention of returning it. “If your grandmother sees this, she’ll scold you again. You’re already not very accomplished, don’t make me lose face in front of the other women in the family.”
Pei Mengzhi laughed in frustration, “Mom, I don’t care about superstition or not. It’s just something someone gave me. How can you take it from me? Give it back!”
“Give it back? Absolutely not.” Mrs. Pei’s tone was cold. “I let you play video games without saying a word, now go back to your room. Also, what kind of friend gives you something like this, cursing you?”
Pei Mengzhi pursed his lips. “She said it’s for protection.”
“Protection?” Mrs. Pei frowned. “If you need a protective charm, we’ll go to the temple tomorrow to get one. Don’t accept strange things from random people.”
“Besides, do you even need protection? Aren’t the bodyguards your dad arranged for you enough? Is there anyone in Lincheng who would dare touch you?”
This was a fact.
Pei Mengzhi couldn’t argue, feeling defeated. “Mom, I’m already an adult. Why do you still control me like this?”
“I’m your mother who cares about you. Who else would worry about you all day?” Mrs. Pei left the room, her face cold, and never once giving the talisman back.
Pei Mengzhi clenched his fists, his lips tightly pressed together.
It seemed he would have to find a way to sneak the talisman back after his mother fell asleep.
But Mrs. Pei didn’t give him that chance.
She went to the kitchen, tore up the talisman Si Fuqing had given him, and threw the pieces into the trash can.
Author’s Notes:
A minute earlier, Pei Mengzhi: I will definitely win her over.
A minute later, Pei Mengzhi: Dad! I was wrong!
