Lulu pointed to a dilapidated old shikumen* building housing multiple families. Clothes hung from many windowsills.

*Shikumen (石库门) means “stone gate” or “stone-framed door,” referring to a unique Shanghai housing style blending Chinese and Western architecture, characterized by stone gateways, brick walls, tiled roofs, and internal courtyards, forming distinctive “lane houses” that were home to most residents and a vital part of old Shanghai’s culture.
Gu Ye parked the bicycle, and Chu Qiao helped Lulu inside.
“It’s on the second floor.”
Lulu spoke softly, her voice strained.
Climbing the stairs was agonizing, every step tugged at her wounds, making her face even paler.
Her lips had turned ashen, with traces of cheap lipstick still clinging to them, like patches of peeling red paint on a worn-out floor, exposing bleak, mottled gray beneath.
Chu Qiao supported her as they slowly made their way up.
But they didn’t actually reach the second floor, Lulu lived in a tiny attic room (a small, separately built space, freezing in winter and sweltering in summer) tucked away at the stairwell landing.
The attic room was small, only about ten square meters, with cheap rent.
It was bitterly cold in winter and unbearably hot in summer.
Anyone with better options would avoid renting such a place.
Lulu took out her keys from her bag, and as she unzipped it, Chu Qiao caught a glimpse of a roll of ten-yuan bills. No wonder the bag had looked so bulky, Lulu had been clutching it tightly all along.
“It’s a bit cramped inside.”
Lulu looked a bit embarrassed.
When she opened the door, a strong medicinal scent floated out.
Chu Qiao was surprised; Lulu appeared to be in good health, so why was she taking medicine in private?
The room was dim. Lulu turned on the light, but it was still dim, perhaps little more than 15 watts.
The yellowish glow didn’t cast much light, but it was enough to reveal the basic furnishings: a bed, a cupboard, a tiny square table, two chairs, a stove, some pots and pans, and a plastic bucket filled with clean water.
To Chu Qiao’s surprise, a little girl was lying on the bed.
It was hard to tell her exact age, but she looked small and thin, probably around four or five.
Chu Qiao hadn’t expected Lulu to have such a young daughter. She had never mentioned having a child, and everyone had assumed she was single.
“Mommy…”
The little girl woke up, her eyes opening wide. They were large and particularly bright in the dim light.
“An’an, you’re awake? Did you sleep well last night? Any nightmares?”
Lulu walked to the bedside, bent down, and spoke to her daughter in a gentle voice.
Her spirits seemed high, and there was no trace of the pain she had been in earlier.
With her jacket on, the scars on her arms were completely hidden.
“Mommy, I dreamed about flying a kite. My kite flew the highest, even higher than an eagle.” the little girl said happily, her voice filled with excitement.
“Once An’an feels a little better, Mommy will take you to fly a kite. It’ll definitely fly higher than an eagle.”
Lulu replied softly, gently stroking her daughter’s cheek.
She was completely different from the Lulu at the dance hall, who had been steeped in worldly weariness.
Even though she was still wearing a tight dress and her heavy makeup was smudged, there was no trace of that worldly aura about her now, just the tenderness of a loving mother.
Chu Qiao and Gu Ye remained silent, not wanting to disturb them.
But Chu Qiao noticed the sweat beading on Lulu’s forehead. Clearly, she was enduring pain. With her injuries, bending over like that must have been agonizing.
“Mommy, do we have guests?”
The little girl asked excitedly, glancing toward Chu Qiao. Guests never came to their home.
“Yes, it’s an uncle and an aunt.”
Lulu said as she straightened up, letting out a faint sigh. Every part of her body ached.
“Hello, Uncle. Hello, Auntie. My name is An’an. Are you Mommy’s friends?” The little girl asked politely.
Chu Qiao smiled and replied, “Yes, we’re your mommy’s friends. Hello, An’an.”
The little girl smiled shyly but was clearly delighted. She spent every day alone at home, with no contact with the outside world. She had longed for visitors for so long.
